Cloak Clasps

What They Are, How They Work, And Where They Go

Our cloak clasps are both decorative and functional. Each of our cloak clasp sets consist of two lead free pewter cast medallions and includes a detachable endless stainless steel chain used as a fastener. Each medallion has one or more sewing stations which are used to attach it to the cloak. The chains that we use are machine made twenty six inch endless stainless chains. The chains are smooth, strong, and unobtrusive.

Our cloak clasps work best when the medallions are sewn facing each other onto each front panel of the cloak. [Although some of you may hate to sew and the mere thought of sewing on a button may send you in to a panic, it is extremely inadvisable to safety pin your cloak clasps on to your garment. Safety pins are, at best, a temporary solution.] Sewing the medallions onto your cloak is only slightly more complicated than sewing a button onto a coat. As the medallions are heavier than the average button, and a cloak is heavier than the average garment, the points of attachment will be under more strain. Therefore, we suggest that you sew a piece of leather or a round, flat button with four holes on the inside of the cloak as you sew (please use a heavy thread) the medallion onto the front of your cloak. You will be sewing the medallion on the outside of the garment through the garment to the button or leather patch on the inside of the garment. When the medallions are sturdily attached to the cloak, put the cloak on and loop the chain one or more times around both medallions and your cloak will be clasped.

We have a variety of different clasps. Although all of our cloak clasps are very sturdy and come with a lifetime guarantee (if you break it, we will fix it), we suggest that you use one of our larger sets with two sewing stations on each medallion if you have a particularly heavy cloak --leather, fur, or floor length wool. Our cloak clasps are not sweater clips and, just as we advise against using sweater clips to clasp your cloak, we also advise against using our cloak clasps to hook your sweaters together. Cloak clasps should, and can, be used for cloaks, capes, leather vests, or coats.

A word to the wise: Do not put your clasps through your washing machine or dryer. Although our clasps are guaranteed, and we will be happy to fix them if you ever have any problems, we will not fix your washer or dryer.

And yes, as is the case with all Nagle Forge & Foundry items all of our quality lead-free pewter cloak clasps are Made in the U.S.A.
