Georgian England

Often deemed England’s romantic period, England’s Georgian Period refers to the century plus reign of the Hanoverian Georges. (George I, George II, George III -popularly remembered as Mad King George by all American schoolchildren- and George IV -known familiarly as Prinny to all readers of Regency romance novels.)

It is easy to look back and picture pre-industrial Georgian England as a sort of green Eden of pastures, small farms and large estates interspersed with charming villages inhabited primarily by vicar’s daughters all busily writing poetry and embroidering. But in reality the Georgian years encompassed more than a century of conflict.

This was the salty lusty England of Hogarth. This is the England that had to face Bonnie Prince Charlie’s uprising -and several far more impressive Irish uprisings. This was the England that fought the Seven Years War, and the Napoleonic Wars. And, in between, this was the England that struggled to maintain it’s Empire when the Thirteen Colonies -that later formed the United States- revolted. This was Jane Austen’s England, but it was also the England that gave birth to the Industrial Revolution and Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein).

And so it is appropriate that our Georgian replica ring is based on the mass produced fairings -inexpensive tokens- that the common workingmen of Georgian England gave their sweethearts. The original of our Georgian Rose ring is a simple thing that shows the wear of time. Originally an inexpensive thing that may well have meant the world to the woman who first wore it. Our recreation has repaired the ravages of time. It is available in sizes 4.5 through 9 by special order. Made just for you.
